Story
Our mum, wife, nan and friend suddenly became ill in July. What started as a cough and suspected chest infection suddenly spiralled into a series of hospital admissions, with unexplained symptoms to finally reaching a diagnosis and a life expectancy of weeks.
This was a very difficult time for her and our family trying to navigate this emotionally devastating news and provide the support she needed during a pandemic.
After receiving the final diagnosis and the news we only had a few precious weeks left with our 'angel of the north', we were faced with the decision of what was the best care for her. She had fought hard during the brief time she was ill and was keen to be cared for in a hospice. We were very fortunate to be offered a space at St Bede's Palliative Care Unit at the QE Hospital. Whilst St Bede's is on the hospital grounds, the hospital only provide the building and the staff, everything else is bought with charitable funds. Whilst in the unit she received the best possible care from the most wonderful team of nurses and with the kindness of past donations, they were able to support her complex and rapidly changing needs.
Pearl was always thinking about other people and how she could improve the lives of others and asked, if instead of flowers to family we could continue the good work of St. Bede's Palliative Care Unit.
In loving memory of our mum, wife, nan and friend - thank you x
