Story
The KA1 Famous 5, a.k.a Aimee Cook, Daniel Fernandes, James Bentley, Nick Caulfield & Stuart Ralph will be taking on the beast that is the 3 Peaks Challenge this August! Some of you may be thinking what is the 3 Peaks…
Well, these folks are expected to ascend the three tallest peaks of Great Britain, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon all in all ascending over 11,000 ft over 26 miles of ascent within 24 hours.
Why are they taking on this challenge?
The overall aim is to raise money for DW’s charity – The Encephalitis Society. This charity has particular resonance with DW, one of whose own employees has been affected by this illness in recent months.
What is encephalitis?
This is a wonderful small UK based charity that supports, raises awareness and conducts research into inflammation of the brain known as encephalitis. The inflammation can damage nerve cells resulting in ‘acquired brain injury’. Anyone can become ill with encephalitis, at any age and compared to other infectious diseases, encephalitis has a high mortality rate.
What does the society do?
Established in 1994, The Encephalitis Society supports adults and children affected by encephalitis, their families and carers by providing advice and information and working at national level to improve services. They produce evidence-based information on all aspects of the condition, raise awareness about the condition and its subsequent problems and conduct research and work in partnership with other researchers and their establishments.
Where will the money go?
Every single penny these guys raise will go directly to funding one of the many projects of The Encephalitis Society. Being the only organisation of its kind in the world, this small UK-based charity is doing international work for those affected by this ‘hidden disability’. Here are some examples of the wonderful and important work that can be achieved with your fund raising:
- £5 will buy a DVD for parents to watch with their child to explain what has happened to their brain.
- £50 will buy an hour’s support on the telephone and an information pack and DVD for family affected by Encephalitis.
- £500 will buy an afternoon’s support meeting for people affected and their family members facilitated by Society staff.
- £5,000 pays for 3 newsletters and their distribution to members for one year (these are a lifeline for many members).
- £15,000 will sponsor a Retreat weekend or a weekend for children and families affected.
- £25,000 will pay for one member of the support team for one year.
- £50,000 pays for the Society member’s activities and meetings for one year.
This is a really great cause so please donate :)
Thanks,
Peak Too Soon a.k.a Nick, James, Dan, Stu and Aimee
