On April 4 2013 I will be taking part in the Marathon des Sables (The MDS) – “The toughest footrace on earth.” It is a six day race across the Moroccan Sahara Desert completing the equivalent of 6 marathons in those six days (approx 150 miles in total) the conditions will range from a possible 50 degrees C in the afternoon to sub zero at night, covering some of the most inhospitable terrain on the planet.

 

I am running the MDS in memory of Natalie Moss, a dear friend of mine who sadly passed away in February 2012. She spent her last six weeks in the care of Jersey Hospice, and I know that the care that they gave during that time was amazing and really helped her husband Karl and family during what must have been the most trying of circumstances. Natalie is with all of us who knew her and her strength and courage during her illness was humbling. Nat got into running for a while and I think she would love to see me bumbling through the desert for a bit of fun!

 

Jersey Hospice is a specialist palliative nursing service which provides holistic care, free of charge, for patients with cancer and motor neurone disease. The Hospice provides invaluable services to the local community here in Jersey including home care, day hospice care, in patient services, therapies and bereavement counselling. Although it costs more than £2 million to run the Hospice every year, it receives no funding from the States of Jersey government and relies entirely on the generosity of the public.
