Story
Every year over 30000 runners complete The London Marathon - since the first crossing in 1875 only only 6150 have swum The English Channel from Dover to France, whether as a solo crossiing or part of a team.
In September 2012 I will be swimming The English Channel from Dover to France as part of a team to raise money for my charity - Aspire.
Aspire provide the practical support needed by those who have suffered a spinal cord injury to help them live independant lives. This support ranges from grants to provide specialist equipment to providing accessible living arrangements and all the support and guidance required.
Although this challenge is several months away it will take a lot of time and training to be able to swim for several hours in very cold and rough water with the added excitement of swimming through one of the World's busiest shipping lanes. It's not just the distance (at least 21 miles) but a flat out sprint to get across before the weather, tide or P&O Ferries conspire to beat us!!!
Just in case you still don't think it's a tough enough challenge already bear in mind that it's all done non-wetsuit in just a cossie in about 14 degree water temperature and probably a good deal of it will at night, in the dark!!!
To achieve this there will be several training events prior to the Channel Swim itself and you can also keep up with these and other events and stuff going on by visiting http://www.devonandcornwallwildswimming.co.uk/home and the Devon Wild Swimming and Cornwall Wild Swimming Facebook pages.
