Story

Last year I had a great year of fundraising, during which I competed in the Wyre Forest 10km, the Great Midlands Fun Run, the Cinder Path 10km run and the Birmingham Triathlon.  I did all of this for 2 reasons: firstly, I was very unfit and wanted to get back in shape and secondly, more importantly, I wanted to raise as much money as I could for The League of Friends of John Taylor Hospice. This was where my sister-in-law, Catherine Smith, aged 23, sadly passed away in 2009. Three years earlier, she was diagnosed with a brain tumour, which, despite radiotherapy and chemotherapy, proved to be untreatable. In the final three months of her illness, Catherine received round-the-clock care at John Taylor Hospice. The staff there did so much for her, not only looking after her physical needs but also ensuring that she lived her life well until she died.

I decided that after everything that they did for Catherine in her final months, I should make an extra effort this year to fundraise for them. I raised just under £200 in 2014 but this year I want to raise much more! This is where Race to the Stones comes into it. This is a 100km (62 miles) ultra-marathon, starting at Lewknor in Oxfordshire and ending at Avebury in the North Wessex Downs. It takes place over the weekend of the 11th and 12th July, running 50km on the first day, camping overnight and running the other 50km on the second day.

I will update this page as to how my training is going, since I have never even completed a half marathon before, let alone an ultra-marathon!  I would like to raise at least £300 but hope to raise as much as possible in order to help John Taylor Hospice support other families with the same love and care received by Catherine.

thanks!
