Story
I was lucky enough to meet Bobby Moore. Just once, in the Wembley Press Room toilets during an England-Cameroon friendly in 1991. Our brief chat went something like this...
ME: (After awestruck doubletake) Wow. Evening Bobby.
BOBBY: Evening, mate. Bloody freezin’ out there, isn’t it?
I’ve had longer conversations with sport's great and good, but there’s not many I treasure more.
Bobby died two years later, aged just 51, of bowel cancer - the third most common cancer in the UK after breast and lung cancer. Every day, almost 100 people in this country are diagnosed with the disease. Sadly, 44 people lose their lives to it.
On October 9th I'll be puffing my way around 13.1 miles of leafy London parkland on behalf of the fund established in Bobby’s memory.
Whatever you can donate to raise awareness of - and continue the fight against - bowel cancer will be much appreciated. Thank You. Paul
