Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Last year, when I was recovering from cancer, I joined a choir. The choir is called Sing for Life and was set up by Cancer Focus. The choir is for anyone affected by cancer, whether that person is yourself, a family member or a friend.
We are a community choir of over fifty strong. The emphasis is on meeting people and having fun. None of us are particularly expert singers but we all get a great buzz from taking part.
When I suggested entering the 9 mile Marathon Walk I was delighted with how many members of the choir wanted to take part. Not just to take up the challenge but also to raise funds for Cancer Focus and help other people here in Northern Ireland facing cancer. We might not be the fastest on the route but we should certainly be the most tuneful.
I was diagnosed with a rare form of kidney cancer in 2011 which required a very major operation including open heart surgery, four blood transfusions and a long time in intensive care. In total I was in hospital for five weeks.
I was always an active person, but my treatment for cancer made me severely incapacitated for many months. To be able to walk out in the fresh air again was very important for me, I know it made a positive impact on my health and aided my recovery.
To be fit enough to complete a nine mile walk with my fellow choir members and friends is a fantastic milestone for me. It took around 18 months to recover from my cancer treatment but now I feel great.
