Story
Hello everyone,
I am raising money for the Peter Cowley Africa Trust, and all donations will go towards Project Riandu to help build a school for 200 deaf teenagers in Kenya! This is a very exciting project and will provide a lasting resource for the local people, creating jobs and providing a secondary education for local deaf children.
The project has been set up with the help of the local community, and will provide for a big need (there are currently 71 primary schools for the deaf in Kenya, but only 5 secondary schools). This project is strongly supported by local Bishop Moses Nthukah, and the local Mother's Union who have already helped raise around 10,000 pounds towards the project. Project Riandu is taking place over three build phases (three summers), starting this summer, with the hope of completing the school by 2017. In total, the team aims to raise 300,000 pounds towards the construction of the school.
The school will be built in Riandu, near Siakogo, in eastern Kenya, on a site next to an existing primary school, and both schools will share sports facilities (e.g. a football pitch). The school is being designed by a student team of architects from the UK under the guidance of professional architect Samantha Worrall (CPMG architects), and will be built by student volunteers from the UK (including me) as well as local Kenyan contractors.
All donations go straight towards the building materials for the project. I will be paying for flights/accommodation when going out to Kenya to help with the building of the school! Any donations you make are greatly appreciated by me, but especially by the local community (who have already helped raise funds towards the project).
