I have a week off work at Easter so starting on Good Friday (10th April) I will be travelling back in time to the 1980s (i.e. giving up anything that was invented or became common in households after the 1980s, like my mobile phone, computer, internet, and any more than the three basic TV channels) for a whole week to raise money for Whale and Dolphin Conservation.
WDC and I were both born in the 1980s, which was also the decade when the International Whaling Commission decided to implement a moratorium on commercial whaling, recognising that many species of whale had been driven to the brink of extinction. Despite this, whaling has continued, along with the killing of dolphins and porpoises. Every year, in total, around 100,000 cetaceans are killed in this way: https://uk.whales.org/our-4-goals/stop-whaling/
We need to protect whales not just because they are amazing, intelligent creatures with strong social connections and emotions, but they are also vital in our battle against climate change. Whales play a huge role in carbon capture and storage - including by providing nutrients for surface phytoplankton in the form of their poo! https://uk.whales.org/ecological-whale/
Giving up technology for a whole week is going to be a huge challenge, so I'd like to thank everyone who helps to make it worthwhile by sponsoring me! To drop in some 80s references - let's CHOOSE LIFE for whales, help WDC to Just Say No to whaling, and take steps to Reanimate our planet!
