Story
I am currently training to run the Surrey Half Marathon in order to raise funds for the Souther Spinal Injuries Trust.
I am working as a Doctor on Neuro Intensive Care in University Hospital Southampton and have come across many patients with spinal injuries. I have witnessed a glimpse of the devastating impact it can have not only to the patient but to all those around them. After the patients we see have initially been treated in intensive care, we discharge them to the Duke of Cornwall Spinal treatment centre in Salisbury for ongoing rehab.
Often the patients that I have seen have been young, previously very active and have had to deal with a dramatic change in their lives. Their resilience and fight has inspired me to get off my backside and do something further to contribute to their care.
Those of you that know me will testify to the fact that I usually struggle to complete half a mile let alone half a marathon. However it would be a privilege to be able to raise money in order to improve the facilities and enhance the recovery of spinal patients at Salisbury.
Your donations will be contributing to some of the following:
-powered add-ons for manual wheelchairs (to give a power boost for hills and rough terrain, and reduce wear and tear on shoulders)
-lightweight wheelchairs – we can add funds to wheelchair voucher, to help buy higher specification chairs than would otherwise be possible
-adjustable, profiling beds that are designed for home and family life
-sports chairs for wheelchair rugby or basketball
-a whole range of handcycles and hybrids
Please with this in mind I would appreciate any contribution big or small towards this fundraising run.
Wish me luck!
Omar
