Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On the night of Saturday 7th June, I cycled 100km along the streets of London to raise money for Samaritans. It was a fantastic night, and a great privilege to be able to make a contribution to a cause about which I care so much. A huge thank you to everyone that's supported me and, more importantly, the Samaritans.
For four years now it's been my privilege to be a volunteer with Central London Samaritans. CLS is the largest branch of the national Samaritans movement, and traces its history back to 1953, and a bakelite telephone in the crypt of a church in the City of London.
Chad Varah's vision was that people experiencing suicidal despair should not have to suffer alone, and in more than 60 years since he took the first call, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year, the phone lines have never closed. It was a simple vision with an incredible legacy, and I'm very proud to have a small part in it.
Today CLS operates from offices in Soho, and is supported by more than 450 volunteers. As well as supporting callers by phone, email and text, and visitors to the branch, it reaches out to those in greatest need through projects with the homeless, prisons, Network Rail and Transport for London, and people bereaved by suicide - to name but a few.
We are part of the national Samaritans movement (and support callers from across the country), but operate as an independent charity, which is volunteer led and run, with the support of small and dedicated staff team. The bulk of the money needed to run the service is raised from voluntary donations.
