Story
In the summer I contemplated signing up for the Thames Path Challenge, a walk along the river from Putney to Henley carefully measured out at 100 km. After the first training walk of 40km I could not move and the thought of walking a greater distance was risible.
I did two more walks over the summer, as I did not want to over-train and having been persuaded to sign up, took part in the challenge over the weekend of 14 September.
A group of us including my daughter, walked from 9am on the Saturday morning through to the Sunday; hobbling slightly at the end and quite weary but pleased not to have to eat any more jelly babies to keep us going.
I had no idea whether I would make it as I had forgotten just how painful blisters can be. I wanted to be sponsored on successful completion of the walk ie. paid on results so am only fund raising now having walked the walk.
The project I am raising money for is a stone work restoration project at Christ Church, Turnham Green. This beautiful church in Chiswick was built in 1843 and showing its age. The architects were William Bonython Moffatt and George Gilbert Scott of St Pancras Station and Albert Memorial renown. The building has flint walls, brick spire and stone dressings. The Bath stone has been discoloured over time and the weathering has meant that much of the stonework is breaking away and urgently needs attention.
I'd be delighted if you would add this stonework project to your list of charitable causes supported and sponsor me via this JustGiving page.
Many thanks, Nigel.
