Story
Brand new for 2024, 99 Miles in November is an exciting challenge which you can complete at your own pace. You choose how to make the journey – walk, jog, run, cycle, swim or you could even take part on horseback.
Riley's story:
Our little boy Riley who is 5 years old was diagnosed with a type of brain tumour in March 2024. Here is how it all began:
Following a preschool eye test, it was revealed something wasn't right. Urgent referrals to the hospital and investigations discovered he had a type of brain tumour called 'Optic Nerve Glioma'.
The tumour was so large , it was pressing on his right optic nerve causing him to be blind in that right eye. Ultimately, he underwent surgery to remove the tumour, in doing so they had to remove his right eye too.
Riley had post op issues and underwent more surgery, which meant more stays in hospital (or sleepovers as Riley calls it) and still are currently up and down to hospital trying to get some more issues sorted.
Riley has been a superhero throughout all this. His positivity and smiling face has encouraged us as a family to push through.
We are so thankful his tumour was benign and that the fantastic NHS team acted so quickly to remove it. Ultimately saving his good eye to prevent further spread.
The past 6months has been a difficult time for us all, especially Riley. It was a complete shock to us as Riley has been fit and healthy. The only one thing I would say that was he started to get a slight squint . So I would encourage people if they notice this in their child to get an eye test.
As a family we want to focus on something and so we decided to join in this fundraiser to help raise awareness - help raise funds for research. The challenge is to complete 99 miles in November, either walking or running, climbing a hill or doing exercise.Thank you for all your donations. Perhaps you can join in too, set yourself target miles wether it be walking, cycling, going to the gym.
In November we will post pictures of our challenge - where we have walked.
