Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Homelessness is something that is just a few steps away for many of us. They say that we are only three pay cheques away from the gutter and I have seen many people who have come from seemingly stable back backgrounds and in the short space of a couple of months have found themselves out of work, and out of their homes.
I have been involved with a range of community-based activities at Notts County football club for a couple of years now and when they offered me the chance to participate in CEO Sleepout I couldn't refuse. I thought this was a great way of bringing attention to the factors that contribute to homelessness and to raise some funding to help support people who are down on their luck.
CEO sleepout involves sleeping out in the grounds of Notts County football club for one night. It doesn't emulate at all what the real experience of homeless people is but it does at least raise awareness of the plight of homeless people: and by generating income which can be diverted to local charities it's a great opportunity to make a contribution towards helping people through what is a very difficult time.
As the as CEO of The Mighty Creatives I am delighted to be able to participate in this very valuable program. Many of our young people in the East Midlands and Nottingham risk finding themselves homeless these days so it's imperative on all of us to do what we can to support young people in one of life's most difficult challenges.
Terraced? Semi? Detached? Year 7 plan their future homes.
A few years ago I was involved in a year seven project in East Midlands secondary school and the class talked about their future dream homes but were also aware of the challenges that faced them. This poem below reflects the worries and dreams of that year group and I think it speaks to many of us who have faced what it means to lose one's home:
You gotta agree,
Sort it out reasonably.
You gotta think it out,
You’ve gotta act quick.
Silence hush descends.
You’ll need pools of light
You’ll need water, air, space.
Somewhere to park the car
When the days close in.
Can I get a red phone box?
Can I get an allotment?
Silence hush descends.
You’re gonna see nothing
With windows like that.
You’re gonna be a resident, remember.
You’re gonna freeze to death
With walls like that.
Are we gonna pretend?
That we have to pay mortgages an’ ‘owt?
Silence hush descends.
You gotta make a choice,
Or you’re gonna get stuck.
Best to say little,
If you’re not sure.
If you don’t wanna pay for ‘owt can we live in a toilet?
We could use our imagination.
Silence hush descends.
Everyone’s gotta live somewhere
Everyone’s gotta have a place
They can call their own.
But if you’re gonna want a family.
But if you’re gonna get you a mortgage,
You gotta be quick,
You gotta be sharp,
You gotta get rid of those ghosts that moved onto your land.
Silence hush descends.
