In 2014, Spitalfields Music is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its Learning & Participation programme. The charity is well known for its semi-annual musical festivals, they are just the tip of an iceberg. The Learning & Participation programme reaches out into the local community in East London taking music to all ages and ethnic origins. To celebrate its achievements and help raise money to ensure its future, a group of team members, friends and supporters will walk 25km around Tower Hamlets, which is where the charity is based, and mainly operates, on 10th May.
Thursday 15th May
Well, we did our walk on Saturday and we all survived intact. 40 or so souls in all, led by a very sprightly Alan Moses, who at nearly 70 shows no signs of slowing up. No damage done and despite heavy legs towards the end, no after effects which bodes well for Emma and Beth's Sahara challenge later in the year. We only got soaked once, after lunch as we walked past the Olympic stadium and then through Victoria Park and we saw plenty of sunshine on the way.
The route was full of stuff to admire, from the old, such as the Bell Foundry on Whitechapel Road and Three Mills on the River Lea canal, to the very modern Olympic park and all the new housing being built in Poplar and to the East of the City. As a Londoner, I thought I knew my home town pretty well but there was much that I hadn't seen before and much to get excited about too.
Our route took us from Shoreditch down towards the river past Tobacco Dock and Shadwell Basin, and then round the Isle of Dogs, pausing at Island Gardens before heading up the eastern side to Poplar, along the High Street towards the canal and from there up to the Olympic stadium at Stratford. After lunch - buns and tracker bars - we headed west back towards the City, through Victoria Park, before winding our way back to Spitalfields crossing Brick Lane.
All in all a very good day which ended with a drink and some musical entertainment before we all pushed off home.
It merely remains for me to thank all those who have supported us and who have helped Spitalfields Music with their generosity,
Nick
