As one of the poorest countries in West Africa, The Gambia is experiencing serious challenges in its health sector, particularly in the treatment of End Stage Renal Disease (Kidney Failure) at the Dialysis Centre in the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital; the country’s main referral hospital.

The Ida Bass Kidney Foundation, a registered UK charity (No: 1156436), has been at the forefront of providing much-needed support for the day-to-day running of the Dialysis Centre since 2013. Over the years, the charity has managed to secure 14 dialysis machines, consumables, medical equipment and brings a team of surgeons from the United Kingdom to perform free vascular access surgery (fistula) on a yearly basis.

The Ida Bass Kidney Foundation charity is now entering a new phase in its work. The demand for its support and services is overwhelming and consistently outstrips what it can provide. However, it is striving to address these challenges as well as hoping to grow significantly over the next five years.

One urgent priority for the charity is to setup a new 24-bed haemodialysis centre at the Kanifing General Hospital. This will not only ease the pressure on the current centre, it will also provide desperately needed treatment for the increasing number of patients on the waiting list. The horrible reality for these patients is that many of them have died whilst awaiting treatment that is just not available within the country’s current healthcare system. If this situation does not change, many more are likely to face the same fate.

We are asking for your support to raise £10,000 to commence the initial construction work on a new 24-bed centre which, once completed, will provide dialysis treatment for an additional 48 patients per day. 

This project is very close to our heart, as we have seen first-hand how desperately in need the Gambian people are. So, every penny of support you can provide us will help fund the establishment of this centre and will, ultimately, save lives.
