BUPA London 10,000 2011 · 30 May 2011 ·
Two years ago, at the age of just 62, our Mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease.
Alzheimer's is the most common form or dementia. It is estimated that around 750,000 people in the UK have some form of dementia and within the next ten years, it is estimated that this figure will rise to around 1 million. To be diagnosed at such a young age is comparatively rare, the Alzheimer's Society estimates that only around 16,000 people under the age of 65 have dementia.
Alzheimer's is a cruel and progressive disease, meaning that over time more parts of the brain become affected and the symptoms become more severe. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer's Disease although drugs may temporarily alleviate some symptoms or slow down their progression.
The Alzheimer's Society provides invaluable support to people living with dementia and their families. While the majority of you will be enjoying a relaxing Bank Holiday Monday on 30th May 2011, we will be running the BUPA London 10,000 race, so if you are able to dig deep and pledge money to help us support this charity and the wonderful work it does, we would really appreciate it.
