Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit my Just Giving page.
As my husband quite rightly points out, until recently, running was a foreign concept to me - a waste of time and effort, especially when we've got a perfectly good car. However, the day after Boxing Day 2010, after a period of a month of being ill, our daughter Milly, aged 6, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes is a chronic, life-threatening condition. It is an auto-immune system condition and it’s cause is not related to diet or exercise. Type 1 develops when the body’s own immune system attacks and destroys the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. It is not something she is going to get better from, unless a cure is found. Every day, Milly has to test her blood sugar levels in excess of six times and give herself at least five injections of insulin. We have to calculate the carbohydrate content of everything she eats and take into account anything that could affect her body's demand for insulin (and that includes the weather, how active she will be in the next couple of hours, how excited she is and so on...) It's a constant balancing act! I feel like my beautiful, intelligent, hardworking daughter is 'broken' and I want to help 'fix' her. That's where J.D.R.F come in. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation exists to fund research into the causes of Type 1 and to find a cure and that's what I want...for Milly and all the other children with Type 1.
