Story
At the start of 2023 I joined Northowram Pumas Running Club, at that point I thought I was doing well running 2 or 3miles. After some cajoling my famous last words to one of my good friends were “I’ll never be one of those crazy runners that enters races or does long distance like marathons!” Little did I know I’d get the bug and less than a year later I’d have done my first half, signed up to a second and be registering for Edinburgh marathon 2024!
Choosing a charity is my way of giving something back and which one was the easiest decision - Diabetes Uk. My mum has been Type 1 diabetic since she was 6yrs old (I won’t say how old she is now!) but she’s managed the challenges and difficulties of diabetes for over 50years. At one time in history it was a death sentence, these days thanks to medical advances people can live and thrive thanks to the amazing work and funding put into research and treatment.
Early memories of her showing me how to call for help, testing her blood and helping inject insulin likely had an influence on my subsequent career in nursing, the ability to keep a level head and I’m certainly not squeamish which helps!. With a strong family history and being a mum myself, it made me consider the value of staying fit and healthy for those I love and the importance of looking after myself- running is giving me something priceless, so now it’s my turn to give a little back to something close to my heart..
Then following already committing, a curve ball came our way in December 23.. which gives me further reason to dig deep for this- Ironically my daughter Amelia received an unexpected diagnosis of type 1 diabetes..she’s a tough cookie and is managing well overall. The whole paediatric and diabetes team at Huddersfield and Calderdale trust where I work were phenomenal and their support continues to be priceless as we navigate this new normal.
If you got through all that well done! Eternally grateful for any support, shares or donations💕
