Story
Thanks for visiting my JustGiving page, where I summarise the aims behind my ViewRanger Double Challenge 2017.
In 2016 I walked throughout the year a total of 2500-miles ... but managed very little cycling ~ at just over 100-miles. I realise that, as a Personal Trainer, cycling had been the passion that originally fired my interests in fitness and nutrition.
Therefore, time for a change ...
To balance the efforts for 2017, I deliberately set myself a pair of ViewRanger Challenges, including reintroducing some miles on two wheels.
I am aiming to raise monies to supports at least a part of a week's costs faced day-in-day-out by the splendid team at St Wilfrid's Hospice in Eastbourne.
Due to the nature of my Challenges, I am not seeking pence (or part thereof) per mile ... more likely a sum when milestones are reached; or per month completed ... etc
My target is to walk 1,500 miles and to cycle between 750 & 1,500 miles in the year ~ equivalent to just over 4.4 miles per day of each ~ if the end result is to be a combined total of 3,000 miles.
Some background now explained as to the recording of distances covered using the ViewRanger mobile GPS app : It is an excellent application available on Apple and Android mobile smartphones ~ using accurate GPS technology to monitor & record the following :
- movement ~ distance and speed
- differentiate speed of movement for different activities
- provide average speed for a particular track completed or in progress
- likewise for height climbed on Ordnance Survey mapping routes ... and
- give estimated time of arrival when following a route
... amongst other things. As the leader of a Rambling and Nordic Walking Club, this app has made our planning and executing the routes we take much more interesting and practical.
No, you cannot walk with this on a treadmill in a Gym or Fitness Studio to clock up miles whilst not actually moving over the ground ... nor jump in the car and record away.
2016 was the year when I learned exactly how this all works! The ViewRanger website then records from 1st January to 31st December exactly what one has done throughout the year ~ in my case under the Nom de Marche of "Walk Leader".
