Story
In August 2016 I was given the news that I was suffering from Laryngeal Cancer. I'd had very few symptoms apart from feeling a little tired in the weeks leading to my diagnosis and then I started to suffer from a sore throat and earache. A visit to the Doctor followed when the earache didn't go away, the Doctor diagnosed a waxy ear and advised me to get them cleaned which I did. After two further weeks the earache still persisted and I found a small lump on the side of my neck just below my jawline, this was while I was on holiday. A second visit to a different Doctor resulted in me being referred to ENT, I had a feeling something wasn't quite right when I was not offered any anti-biotics. A whirlwind of tests scans and biopsies confirmed it to be a tumour on my larynx. In September 2016 I subsequently had to undergo a laryngectomy where the surgeons removed the tumour along with my voice-box and several other bits and pieces in my throat. My throat was reconstructed with muscle and tissue from my leg. I also underwent 30 sessions of radiotherapy and 6 sessions of chemotherapy in an effort to kill the disease. All the time it was important to me to know that Macmillan were on hand for me and my family and they are still there for me now, with support groups and advice available to me at any time. There is the marvellous Horizon Centre at Bristol Gate where meetings and support groups can get together
In order to give something back for the help I received I am undertaking the Macmillan South Coast Mighty Hike in June and any sponsorship you can give, no matter how much will be greatly appreciated. The sad fact is that at some point in our lives, there is a strong likelihood that you, or someone very close to you will suffer from some sort of cancer during their lifetime. With all our help MacMillan will be there to support and assist them.
