Story
I'm doing this for my Gran really. I remember going to watch my dad and uncle do the race when I was little and it was just the most exciting thing. A proper day out with my Gran and Grandpa, eating Fish and Chips waiting for them to come through the finish line where there'd be lots of celebrations and then home for tea.
Unfortunately now my Grandpa has passed away and my Gran has dementia. It is an horrendous condition which is slowly taking away the person we know and love. It's difficult on the whole family of course, but the worst part is that Gran knows what is happening to her, she's seen her aunt and her own mother deteriorate in the worst way and now it's happening to her. I just think that would just be the most scary thing.
Her condition is, of course, worsening, but she's now in a fantastic home with lovely nurses who organise all kinds of weird and wonderful activities. Including "healing ponies" which are Shetland ponies, dressed up to the nines, who come and sit and get petted. My Aunt was beside herself when she walked in on this.
So please, donate a few quid and support this brilliant charity, and if there's no other reason for you to donate, do it for the ponies.
How your fundraising could help:
£50 could enable four callers to Alzheimer’s Society’s Helpline to receive
the information and support they need.
£100 could support a person with dementia to receive two fortnightly
befriending visits with a volunteer, enabling them to continue with
their hobbies and interests.
£200 could help run one session of Singing for the Brain®, an Alzheimer’s
Society activity that is designed to be a fun, stimulating and social
activity for people in the early to moderate stages of dementia.
£500 could pay for two sessions of our Carers’ Programme for 12
carers. The Carers’ Programme offers practical tips and strategies
to help carers to cope with the impact of dementia and gives
them information so that they can access local services and start
preparing for the future.
£1,000 could pay for one person to visit a dementia café every week for
a whole year providing information and support to people with
dementia in an informal setting.
