For a while now I’ve wanted to do something that will raise awareness and funds for people with learning disabilities, and that's all down to my fantastic big sister Issy. Despite the incessant teasing from my friends about what “bald Mimi” will look like, I’m going to "Brave The Shave" in January 2017. I already know that I have a wonky head; I’m scared!

I’m doing it because I want people to know about the great job that Mencap is doing to support people like Issy, who live with severe learning disabilities. Mencap was the first organisation in the world to be set up for people with learning disabilities, and their core value is to strive for a reality where those with learning disabilities are valued equally, listened to and included, and this can be felt throughout their care and support services.

Life is not all about achieving the best outcomes and being successful, it’s about considering those less fortunate and more vulnerable than ourselves, reaching out and lending a helping hand. It’s about being able to recognise how lucky a lot of us are to wake up in the morning and understand (vaguely!) what’s going on around us, and not to live in a whirlwind of confusion and anxiety. Mencap is there to help us all reach out and support those with such struggles, who cannot look after themselves in the world we live in. We must strive to live in a society where neurodiversity is welcomed and celebrated; Issy has taught me more about life than anyone else has, we have a
huge amount to learn from each other.
