On 11th July we will once again be taking part in the Le Mans 24hr Kart race at the Alain Prost Circuit next to the Porsche Curves at the famous Le Mans track in France. This is the fifth year we have entered a 24hr race and this year we are aiming to raise funds to purchase a much needed new minibus for a the Nene Valley branch of PHAB, a charity that Mike does some work with in his limited spare time.

 will be once again Mike Smith of Fleet Assist be Duncan Metcalfe of Alphabet and Alan Green of Leaseplan, the three of us have been my team mates for the last four events. This year we are joined by one of Mike's colleagues from Fleet Assist, Alex Marwick, our wildcard (read that as young and fit rather than old and unfit like the three of us!!)

This is the European round of the Teeside Karting championship and attracts some of the best kart drivers in the UK. We will be competing with a number of professionally run teams, so it is no "walk in the park".

If you have done a corporate karting day, you will know how hard 15 minutes can be. During the race we will each complete three two hour stints behind the wheel and if, like Mike, you are nearer to 60 years old than you are to 50, six hours in kart capable of speeds up to 70mph is physically very demanding.  Last year we covered over 1000 miles at race speed in the 24 hours., That is the equivalent of Lands End to Jon O Groats and back to Glasgow, IN A GO KART!!

PHAB is a national charity dedicated to the integration of people with physical disabilities in the community, with the aim of promoting and encouraging people of all abilities to come together on equal terms. The Nene Valley branch covers East Northamptonshire and hosts weekly social events for members, as well as organising trips to national events and arranging residential breaks and activities. We operate two minibuses which are the lifeline for our members. These are driven by volunteer drivers, one of which is Mike and are used to collect members from home and take them to the weekly meet, or off on various trips out. Many of the members are wheelchair bound or have very limited mobility and for some, these events are the only opportunity they get to go out. Unfortunately, the minibuses are getting very old now, in fact one of them is now so bad that it is no longer viable to keep it on the road. The other is on its last legs and we are restricted to how far we can go due to the fragile nature if the bus. We do not have enough funds available to replace the bus which means we can no longer collect some of our friends. Our aim is to raise enough money to fund a replacement for the oldest bus and your support will hopefully help us to achieve that aim. Any donation, no matter how small will help to make a big difference to the lives of a number of disabled people who without these vehicles would have a very limited social life.
