Story
In February 2016 my niece Keeley became ill with what started as a cold/chest infection. It progressed to plural pericarditis and streptococcus pneumonia. At this point fluid began to build up around her heart and she was in a lot of pain. Eventually she was admitted to the Coronary Care Unit at NGH.
Within hours of being there Keeley went into Cardiac Arrest and “died”, the quick response of the staff on this ward saved her life. Keeley was extremely ill. 8 days later she once again “died”, the crash team worked quickly and revived her. All Keeley recalls of this second time was a doctor saying “she’s back with us, she’s back with us”.
All in all Keeley spent almost a month on the CCU ward. The staff were amazing to her and our family and her visitors. Keeley was finally discharged from them in 2018. It has been a long hard struggle for her to gain back her health.
When we saw the Walk for Wards fundraiser we decided we wanted to help raise funds for the CCU as a way of thanking them for saving Keeley’s life.
Keeley’s two sons and other members of the family are taking part in the 5K walk alongside Keeley herself.
Any amount, however small, will help us to reach our target of £550.
