Story

I am raising money for a local charity Sunflowers Suicide Support by climbing all 40 of the most prominent peaks in Gloucester over a single weekend.  (40 peaks for 40 years!) As far as I'm aware this is a challenge that hasn't been completed before so I literally have no idea how long it will take or how hard it will be, or if it is even possible!

What I do know is that I m going to give it my best shot and try to have some fun and raise money along the way!

Why have I chosen to do this?

Having bumped into an old school friend recently it came as a shock to both us when we realised just how many of our friends, acquaintances and in my case family that have taken their own lives in the last 30 years.

I lost my own brother David many years ago and whilst fully aware of the pain my famiIy went through, and continue to go through, I didn't appreciate just how many people are effected by suicide until recently

In 2023 Michael Tuck Estate and Letting Agents celebrate 40 years since my Dad, Michael Tuck made the bold decision to leave his stable job at Barclays bank and become self-employed.  He was very much looking forward to celebrating the 40th anniversary of his business but he sadly passed away in July 2022.

As well as being a well known local business man, Mike was also a keen artist and the very last canvas he painted was of a field of sunflowers.  So it seems particulary appropriate that we have chosen to support Sunflowers Suicide Support as our charity of the year for 2023.

Sunflowers Suicide Support are a local Gloucestershire charity founded in 2017.  Their mission is to reduce the number of people in Gloucestershire who take their own life, and provide support for those bereaved through suicide.

Throughout 2023 Michael Tuck Estate and Letting Agents will be arranging and participating in 40 events to celebrate 40 years to help, raise funds and awareness for Sunflowers Suicide Support.  We will also be offering applied suicide intervention skills training to all of our staff over the course of the year, and generally helping Sunflowers where we are able to.

We know that Mike would be proud to see all of his team come together to help raise awareness and to support other families that are affected by suicide, and any donations small or large will be gratefully received and put to good use.

So look out for sponsored runs, bike rides, swims, fire walking, choir concerts, cake sales, guessing the number of sweets and climbing the 40 peaks of Gloucestershire in the next year!

Thank you for your support and feel free to visit our website to see how we're progressing.

About the charity

Sunflowers was created in memory of Pete Morris who died by suicide in 2016. His family developed the Charity to walk alongside others bereaved by suicide and to be a small ray of light in the darkness; offering others comfort and support that is so desperately needed at such a difficult time. Sunflowers endeavour to provide other families with practical and professional support so they do not feel overwhelmed and alone. This we hope will give a glimmer of hope for the future. Sunflowers also raise awareness around mental health and suicide both on social media and by networking locally and nationally. We deliver accredited training to the wider community and presentations sharing our story. We highlight that it is Okay to not be ‘Okay’ and the importance of talking and of course listening. We feel that everyone can play a small part in connecting with and helping others to feel less alone.
