Story
As many of you know, Josh was involved as a back seat passenger in a tragic car accident in Western Sahara in September 2012 in which two of his close friends died. Josh suffered serious injuries including traumatic head injury and was hospitalised for many months. Whilst outwardly and on many levels he has made a miraculous recovery, he still needs appropriate rehabilitation to achieve his full potential.
Regrettably, there is only one facility in the UK, the Oliver Zangwill Centre for neurological rehabilitation (OZC) in Cambridgeshire that offers the tailored and specialised programmes that Josh and others like him require. OZC provides high quality rehabilitation for people with an acquired brain injury and offers a unique holistic and intensive assessment and therapy programme. The aim of the centre is to help people to become independent at home and in the community, to re-establish satisfying relationships with family and friends and to engage in productive activity in home, education or work settings.
Josh has been accepted at the centre for the programme commencing this September - almost two years to the day after his accident. He is one of the lucky few.
Acquired head injuries are on the increase in the UK: the charity Headway reports a 33% increase in head injury admissions to hospital in the last decade with 10-20,000 severe traumatic brain injuries per year. Sadly, funding does not match the scale of the problem. We hope that through our run and with your support we can help Josh and others like him.
