This week The Inkerman Company will be marching the 150 miles from Lille Barracks to Boscobel House and the site of the Royal Oak. The Royal Oak is the motif emblazoned on the Company's colour and can be found branded on everything to do with the Company, including some fetching tattoos. The Royal Oak was chosen from amongst the colours of the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards on its disbandment to stay with the Company that would maintain its lineage and customs, and was selected because the Companies of the 3rd Battalion were directly descended from the companies that formed around the young Charles II in exile in Bruges and one of the first officers was Col Careless, the officer who had shared in Charles IIs escape from the Battle of Worcester and who had hid with him in the Royal Oak. This pilgrimage back to the birth of the Company and the Regiment is the first time it has been done, and forms a part of the Company's physical and mental preparations for deployment on operations to Iraq at the end of the year.
We will be raising money for our Regimental fund to support our injured soldiers and their families, and you can donàte online. Equally you can come and join us for parts of the walk or even on our final day and celebration at Boscobel House courtesy of English Heritage.
