Those who know me well, will be aware that just ahead of Everton FC and rugby, my passion in life is music and while considering myself primarily a fan of others' music, I've messing around with the guitar and writing my own songs since I was 16, alongside playing in a few bands: Most recently, 'The Oddball 3' with Tarz and Ned. After doing the local open mic circuit and getting some positive feedback about my songs, 'Lockdown' gave me the time and thus the opportunity to finally record them and share them with a broader audience via digital media. Given my day job and a wee bit of shyness; using the moniker 'Elvisoddball AKA' provides a bit of 'anonymity' from online trolls; and sounds a bit more 'rock n' roll' - well, I think so anyway :)
In my songbook, was 'For Many Men', a song inspired by the D-Day landings and particularly their 75th anniversary in 2019. The school where I teach, St John's Catholic Comprehensive in Gravesend, has an active association with the Normandy Memorial Trust via its history society and the passionate extra-curricular activity of its head of history, Mr Murphy. Mr Murphy's connections have given the whole school community the opportunity to hear first-hand the experiences of a number of D-Day veterans; not least George Batts MBE Leg d’Hon, who was an 18 year old Sapper (an elite combat engineer) when he landed on Gold Beach on the morning of D-Day, 6th June 1944.
George has long held an ambition that a defining monument, (similar to other allied nations' monuments), should be built on a single site in France to commemorate the British servicemen, servicewomen and civilians who lost their lives in the Normandy Campaign.
The children at St John's have raised funds for the Trust in various different ways over recent years and given I hope that 'For Many Men' can help too.
My initial intention was simply to donate my 'royalties' from streams and downloads of the track. However, given that they are something like US$0.004 per stream, so negligible, I thought that I'd try this approach too.
