We work to reduce levels of alcohol-related harm by ensuring that policy and practice can always be developed on the basis of research-based evidence. We are are the only UK organisation dedicated to funding high quality research into the causes, impact and prevention of alcohol-related harm.

Story

Alcohol Research UK is the leading research focused charity of its type in the UK and where I'm a trustee. Our work covers all forms of alcohol harm to society. I want to help us fund work (with Adfam) into the best ways to help children brought-up in homes with parent or guardian who drinks hazardously - currently 22% children are in this situation in the UK (that's 2.46mn children). This is far too many and with social services being cut back it is even more important that we find ways to help these needy and vulnerable children. The proposed project is most likely to develop a peer support community for children affected by parental substance abuse - there are only two dedicated services children in England (Brighton and Stockport).
