SOOO, I’m running a half marathon next Sunday (9th October)!! I’m raising money for Together We Learn, a charity very close to my heart that I have had the privilege of working for over the past two years.

Charity Description:

Together We Learn (TWL) is a charity that works with children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Ethiopia so that they have equal access and quality to education. Their work not only is limited to creating useful resources for students and teachers inside the classroom, but they also help to create safe and supportive home environments which enable children to go to school.

My Story:

From age 15, I’ve been a really avid volunteer. From volunteering at Girlguiding, immigration advice centres and female empowerment organisations, I’ve had the amazing experience of meeting people from a range of backgrounds from across all of London. I have loved every moment of it, but I always wanted to contribute to the community where my mum and dad were born and raised, Ethiopia. 

In 2018, I displayed interest in volunteering for the TWL, and in 2021, I was granted a summer position for 2 consecutive summers.  Thanks to the Oxford University Crankstart Scholarship, I have been able to have this position whilst being funded. I’ve worked on multiple projects, including tourism development and improving English outcomes of students using the phonics method. Having worked alongside the UK Team and interacted with members of the Ethiopia team, I have seen how devoted everyone is in helping the charity in fulfilling its objectives. 

As a way of finishing my time working at TWL, I have challenged myself to train for this half marathon. As it is my first, I hope it will be a great learning opportunity for future runs.
