Story

In Lisa’s own words, she shares her experience of a sudden and unexpected stroke at just 41.

The reason we have a team taking on Tough Mudder is to raise awareness, funding for research for early detection and support for rehabilitation.

Lisa’s words ♥️

‘To be the fittest and strongest I have ever been, to wake up not being able to speak and collapsing was the scariest thing ever.

If it wasn’t for my partner Alex, goodness knows if I would be here.

It is terrifying because as a 41-year-old woman, I would never have thought I would have a stroke.

Not being able to tell anyone what I was thinking, not being able to write, people speaking to me and not be able to respond, was so hard.

When the hospital staff or Alex spoke, I knew what I wanted to say I just couldn’t say it.

The hospital staff were fantastic, they had an idea it was a stroke but couldn’t confirm this as my symptoms weren’t crystal clear.

Once I had the relevant tests to confirm it, I cried, to be honest I cried for the 6 days in the hospital as I was so confused and angry.

I had to learn my name and date of birth as the doctors would ask that every time, they would see me.

I also learned to say the word home, might not be a big word but Alex was with me day and night and I knew he need rest as well.

I would say ‘home’ around 830pm every night so he could get a break.

The support I had was amazing, my family, friends, my fitness family and coaches who were also my work colleagues.

Melanie put a post on our private page, I had no idea she had done this.

When I checked it so many people sent me well wishes and I was so overwhelmed and cried for hours.

I think that’s when I knew it’s not just a fitness centre these people really cared.

I had lots of visitors once I had gotten out, I couldn’t reply to messages just yet.

My body was tired and I thought I was okay. I slept constantly; I’m not used to that I’m always buzzing about doing something.

But my body needed it and total rest which I did.
It’s been a couple of months since it happened and the only thing that hasn’t returned to normal is my speech.

Everyone that knows me understands and tells me to take my time, but still upsets me as I will never be the same again.

I try not to get involved with conversations in case I can’t get the words out.

It’s so frustrating.

I want to train again but get annoyed with myself as I know what I could do before. It’s all learning and waiting process as I know in time, I will be lifting heavy weights again.

Our bodies are amazing they adapt and grow when they are fit and ready.

I am so grateful for Melanie choosing the Stroke charity for our Tough Mudder team and bringing it to everyone’s attention.
