Story

Thank you for visiting this page. You may know that I enjoy running, not as a sport but as a "hobby". My journey as a "runner" started, not in school or college, but after the birth of my second  child in 2010. I was 33 years old.

I had always wondered what made people lace-up and go running. I wondered what made them do it, leave the comfort of a couch/home, and venture out AFTER being at work. These were also Mums and Dads, working like me, struggling like me.

When I was still caring for Sanika (3year old) & Eshani ( a few months old) & working full time in a Bank, I felt like I was living my day to be something for someone, a Wife , a Mother, an Employee.  There was no time for Me. I wondered what I wanted to do for myself, I drew a blank. That’s when it dawned upon me to try to lace up and GO. Just go for as long as my feet would allow. It wasn’t too far. - a few hundred meters. I couldn’t run one mile without stopping for a “rest” but I didn’t give up on it. I was so tired after every run but I felt strangely energized.

I bought my first pair of running trainers, in 2010 & signed  up  for a 5 km run,  Nike Night Run.  It wasn’t easy, I was sore and my body ached for many days after the event. I didn't give up.

Going back to the reality of my life then, I was still a Mum with  two young children,  a full-time job,  training for a running event and completing it, was an achievement. I was so proud of my Medal. I slept with it under my pillow for many nights after. That 5 km run, has been tougher than any I have done since and guess what, I didn’t stop running.

My journey has not easy. I have been injured, back, hips, feet, knees, have all protested, at some point. On some runs I have been sick, I have had falls and injured myself, I have been lost, drenched in rain  & on some I just haven't had it in me so I have called home and requested a pickup.

So my story is about the positive impact of running. It is, by no means, an inspiring one. Each of us has our story of triumph over our own demons. This story is about giving back to the sport what I have derived from it.

Since 2010 I have gone on to complete 8 marathons across the world  (New York, Chicago, Dublin, Dubai, Istanbul, Paris, Mumbai and Berlin). In April 2023 I will be running the London Marathon. This is the first time I have chosen to support  charity as part of my running and what better way to do it than to run the biggest marathon in my city, The London Marathon. I am supporting, and, raising money for  Leonard Cheshire.

Leonard Cheshire supports individuals to live, learn and work as independently as they choose, whatever their ability.
