Story
Thank you for visiting our fundraising page....and as you're here we'll be presumptuous that you're going to donate so thank you for that also!
Working together in the Faculty of Medicine, we wanted to do something to raise money as a team for The Beatson Pebble Appeal. Therefore we decided what better way to raise money than to strap ourselves to a very thin wire and fly across the Clyde on what will no doubt to be a rainy Glasgow afternoon! So on Saturday 22nd May 2010 that is exactly what we will do!
So far, we have trained by scaring ourselves silly watching You Tube footage of previous zip slides, discussing the urban myth of giant eels that live in the water of the Clyde and the possibility of them jumping out (!) and the impending threat of watching what we eat from now till the day as the lighter you are....the quicker it will be over...!!
Like everyone we have been touched by cancer and wish to do everything we can to help. However, we are also fortunate enough to work in medical research to see exactly what worthwhile charities like the Pebble Appeal can do.
The Beatson Pebble Appeal is a £10M campaign to raise funds to build the Beatson Translational Research Centre, the final element in the creation of the Glasgow Centre for Cancer Research. The Beatson Translational Research Centre (TRC) will convert basic cancer research into real improvements in treatments for patients. It will focus upon especially common tumours, those that cause the most deaths in Scotland such as endocrine (breast, prostate and ovarian), smoking related (lung, throat, oral) and gastroinestinal cancer.
The Beatson TRC, which the University of Glasgow is developing jointly with the Beatson Institute, Cancer Research UK and the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board, will be the final part necessary to create the Glasgow Centre for Cancer Research, the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Scotland. It will also be one of the largest in the UK.
So far, almost £6M has been pledged. For more information please see http://www.gla.ac.uk/services/givingtoglasgow/beatsonpebbleappeal/home/
It is rewarding to know that the money raised will go directly to treating cancer in Glasgow. Cancer services in Glasgow serve over 60% of the Scottish population. With a wealth of experience in cancer research and a high incidence of the disease the city is strategically important in the fight against cancer.
Thank you again for your donation and we appreciate you giving all you can. Please also feel free to come and support/catch us on the day!
