Story
So at last the Big Day arrived on April 3rd and I finally got to run the 2022 London Landmarks Half Marathon for Prostate Cancer UK. It took me 3 hours 37 minutes to stagger round - only 11 minutes quicker than my best full marathon time of 30 years ago!
I had to wear a special "Star Fundraiser" running bib. I was no. 7 which really stood out among all those 5-digit numbers and got me a lot of encouragement all the way round the mazy Landmarks course. I also had to do a short press interview before the race - all because of you, my wonderful sponsors, who had collectively raised a combined GBP 4,500+ by race day, which apparently made me the highest fundraiser on Prostate Cancer UK's team of some 450 runners.
A special shout out to Tom Franks - a guy I'd never met who joined me around the 4 or 5 mile mark and kept me company to the very end. You were a real help & support, Tom!
My plans to run (and complete) the race, first in 2020 and then in its postponed edition in 2021, were frustrated by Covid-19 regulations, travel and quarantine restrictions. Prostate Cancer UK kindly rolled my team place over to the 2022 event (after my 75th birthday). Of course this gave me a longer opportunity to raise funds for a charity that was extremely helpful and supportive during my treatment in Thailand.
I had my prostate removed by robot in Bangkok in 2019, followed by 39 radiation sessions, and all seems well there. However, I also have bladder cancer, which is proving more difficult to combat as it's a persistently recurrent form of the disease. So far I've had three TURBTs (look it up if you're not squeamish).
If you're a new visitor to this page, thank you for that. Please don't feel obliged, but anything you can give to Prostate Cancer UK will make a difference.
On On!
