In January 2015 I lost my Mum to a long battle with cancer. Throughout this journey, over several years in fact, our family really benefited from the support provided by the Heart Of Kent Hospice, including respite care and general moral support.
In memory of my Mum, and to give something back to the hospice, I am attempting an epic bike challenge in June. I plan to ride unsupported, non-stop, from the start of the South Downs Way (SDW) in Winchester, to the end in Eastbourne, turn straight around and finish back in Winchester. The 'SDW double' is roughly: 200 miles, 8km of climbing, 99% off road and breathtakingly beautiful. I'm aiming to compete this in less than 24 hours and get my ride officially recorded. Despite doing a fair bit of cycling (yawn!), this will be my hardest challenge to-date by a long way. I started training 7 days a week in September, so hopefully that will be enough!
Any contribution you can make, will really make a difference to the hospice. They help families every day, often during dark times, but are reliant on public funding to provide this support. Think of me and smile, being grateful that you won't have to put your legs or back side through hell one sunny day this Summer.
I'm targeting 22/23 June, but this is dependent on dry weather (slippery wet chalk and tyres don't mix well!). Details of how to track me real-time will follow closer to the event.
Cheers
Matthew
