Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit this JustGiving page. We are fundraising in memory of our Matthew to help spread greater awareness and understanding of autism.

Matthew was a beautiful, funny, intelligent young man, a promising engineer, a skilful archer and captain of his University archery team, a loving brother, son and partner who sadly ended his life when the stress of his studies became the straw that broke the camel's back.

It's not widely known that drop out and failure rates are much higher in Higher Education for those with autism as a result of challenges faced in learning and dealing with formal examinations. With greater awareness of this, educators could better accommodate these differences to help reduce the risk of educational 'failure' leading to self harm or suicide.

Suicide rates amongst people with autism are also much higher than in the general population yet many suicide prevention strategies and mental health support services aren't designed to speak to or address the needs of those with autism, increasing their vulnerability. Greater awareness here could also drive change and help save lives.

We want to help more people appreciate the gifts and challenges of living with autism so they can help and support others like Matthew to find a positive, fulfilling future. It may be too late for Matthew but in a world in which around 1 in 100 people have autism, there are many lives that can be saved.
