Today there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
Tomorrow, next month, next year even, there
may be one, or possibly a vaccine – but only if funding is available for research.
The bad news for us is that Richard aged 57 has been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
This is a slow and degenerative disease, which affects the cognitive functioning of the brain and currently the outlook is terminal. It is truly a body blow of a diagnosis and all we can do is to try to keep up aerobic exercise and pop a ‘booster’ pill each day, which helps the neurons to ‘fire’.
There are endless ‘alternative’ therapies and articles about oils and vitamins etc. to help with the symptoms, but it’s going to be hard science and research which finds a way of preventing the amyloid plaques from forming, building up and causing the damage in the brain.
We have been involved in research since the early days of Richard’s diagnosis as he finds it is comforting to be in the hands of specialists who are at the forefront of the search for the cure.
Joining Dementia Research matched us with several projects over the past 16 months, which have been really interesting. It’s also good to know that Richard’s data, collected from the various studies, will be part of the big picture. Rich has just started on a two year, Phase III medical trial for a drug with the research company Re:cognition Health.
Lets hope this will be The One.
Richard and I are raising money for research and awareness of this disease – which typically is associated with old age. Alzheimer’s Research UK has provided the platform for starting this with the Prudential Ride London 46 on July 30th. By sponsoring us
you will be directly contributing to finding a cure for this terrible disease,
which affects so many families.
