Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page in aid of The Candle Project at St Christopher's Hospice. Here's a little information on what the Candle Project does:

 Background

In 1998 St Christopher's Hospice established the Candle Project to work with any child or young person in South East London who has experienced loss through the death of someone close.  It has been guided by Candle Director and St Christopher’s Chief Executive, Barbara Monroe; a recognised expert on children and loss. The aims of the Candle Project are:

1.    To provide individual family and group support to bereaved children and families

2.    To offer training, advice and consultancy to professionals and volunteers whose work brings them into contact with bereaved children

3.    To provide an advice service for parents and carers

"We meet with children from families facing some huge difficulties in their lives.  If your mum, dad, brother or sister dies it is a very sad and difficult time for the whole family.  For some, the death may bring on big changes, such as moving house, and make it even harder for children.

We are able to work alongside families, schools, health and other agencies to offer a network of support to help children make sense of what has happened, and support families in drawing on their strengths and resilience.  This is where your donation makes a difference.”

 - Patsy Way , Candle Project Worker

Recent work

  • In recent years the Candle Project has partnered the British Army in training service volunteers to support activity holidays where service families bereaved by the fighting in Afghanistan and other theatres of conflict can be helped.

  • Last year Candle supported over 250 children; 45% of them had been bereaved through a sudden death.  The project also ran training courses for a variety of professionals and offered telephone support to over 500 families from around the country.  22 groups were run by the project, helping children and families to feel less alone. We also ran undergraduate and postgraduate university validated courses in Childhood Bereavement.
