Story

In Loving Memory of My Big Brave Uncle

Well as you can see, with your help and support we hit the £1500 target so thank you very much to each and every one of you, the event raised £80,000 altogether so great news for St Gemma's.

Fi and Ju did 6 miles in 2 hours 15 mins and Sin, Mich and Me did 12 miles in 3 and a half.

Apart from sore feet and aching thighs we lived to tell the tale.  We all found the event to be a wonderful but emotional experience and are so happy we decided to "Walk Tall for Twiggy".

                                                                            ***********************

As many of you will already be aware my very dear Uncle Michael (or Twiggy as he was affectionately known) lost his very brave fight against lung cancer in January this year.

He faced his illness with a courage I have never experienced before.

On being told at the end of November he would not be given any further treatment and he might only have weeks to live he arranged a party to allow him to buy all his family and friends one last drink, relive happy memories and say a fond farewell to those he knew he would not see again.

He was determined to spend Christmas at home with Auntie Patsy, Michaela, Fiona, Paul, Joseph and Maisie.

Thankfully he was able to do this but on Boxing Day was admitted to St Gemma's Hospice, Moortown, Leeds or the Departure Lounge, as he called it, where he spent his final days surrounded by family and friends.

The care and attention Uncle Michael received during his time there was absolutely second to none.  Nothing was too much trouble for the nurses and staff.  We all came realise what an amazing and supportive place St Gemma's is not only for the patient but also for their family.

This is how I sadly came to be aware of how invaluable St Gemma's is and why me, Julia, Sinead, Michaela and Fiona have decided to raise money by taking part in a 12 mile sponsored Midnight Walk on 15 May in Memory of Uncle Michael who, if it wasn't for this terrible disease, should have been celebrating his own 70th Birthday on 17 May.

Please give as little or as much as you can - every penny helps to allow St Gemma's to continue providing the care and support our family received.

If you do want to sponsor me but prefer not to give online please contact me on 07903503908.

Thank you and I will let you know how much we make.
