NEWS FLASH: WE MADE IT TO PARIS!!!
I still can't believe that I led our 40 strong group around the Arc de Triomphe on our way to the Tour Eiffel. Memories to last a lifetime.
It all began with a dream...
One sunny day a few years ago, my dear friend Petra asked me if I had a dream. I thought a moment and replied that yes, my dream would be to see diabetes cured. Then last winter, JDRF invited me to cycle from London to Paris to raise funds for diabetes research. I knew that this was something I wanted to do. I began training in May 2010 and hope to raise thousands to make diabetes a thing of the past.
JDRF is the leading charity for diabetes research. My family has been connected with them for over thirty years. In addition to continued financial generosity and countless hours spent fundraising, my father was once the International Chairman of JDRF and my mother served on the lay review committee, helping to determine which grants would receive donated funds. Now it is my turn. I know that there is a cure. The researchers are getting so close.
Type 1 diabetes can be an invisible disease as friends do not realise you are diabetic until they see you inject, test your blood sugar or check your insulin pump. But sadly complications such as blindness, limb loss, heart disease and kidney failure can make diabetes all too visible. Ask any family member of a type 1 diabetic and they will tell you that insulin is not a cure. Every day is a different challenge for a diabetic.
After managing my diabetes for over 32 years on my own, it means the world to me that friends are helping to make my dream come true.
Thanks to your support, we will be known as the people who made the dream of a cure for diabetes real! There is a cure and we will find it!
