Mark was diagnosed with Wegeners Granulomatosis in July 2010. His symptoms were:- constantly runny bloody discharge from his nose, sinus pain, intense headaches, every tooth ached like they were going to fall out, couldn't breathe through his nose for 3 months before diagnosis as it was so inflammed, and swollen like a little ball was at the top of his nose. No sense of smell or taste, significant weight loss, night sweats, fever, burning sensation of the scalp, tiredness, eye pain, hearing loss - he was in such a terrible state he felt like he was dying, no-one can understand what he went through unless you have it yourself or have a loved one with this awful illness. Wegeners Granulomatosis is a form of vasculitis, it is incurable but can be managed with drugs. The drugs(including chemotherapy) used to manage vasculitis have their own health risks but they are no doubt lifesaving drugs because in the 1970's before the introduction of cyclophosphamide (which Mark had) you would have died from Wegeners Granulomatosis. There is no known cause although scientists speculate that people may be genetically pre-disposed and something like an infection might activate the disease.
Vasculitis is a rare inflammatory disease which affects about 2-3000 new people each year in the UK. Vasculitis means inflammation of the blood vessels. Any vessels in any part of the body can be affected. There are several different types of vasculitis.
Vasculitis UK do brilliant work as they are always there to help. It is run by people with vasculitis for people with vasculitis and they are working towards greater awareness of these incurable and life threatening diseases, too many people have such a long road to being diagnosed - it doesn't need to be this way. Vasculitis UK fund research projects aimed at developing better treatments for vasculitis.
