Story

We will be walking the two moors way in 3 days. This is a route from Wembury near to Plymouth stretching up through the moors all the way to Lynton in North Devon. A total 105 miles and will work out roughly 35 miles a day.

At the age of 36 last year a month into the first lockdown I was diagnosed with mouth cancer. Very rare in the under 50s and much more in the bracket of a life style cancer. I had part of my tongue removed and my neck sliced open to remove some lymph nodes. I was hoping this would be it, however it wasn't to be and had to have chemo and radiotherapy. The radiotherapy was to my neck and tongue and sparing all the details was the most brutal experience to go through... I am one of the lucky ones though, the cancer was easily picked up due to having a large ulcer like tumour on my tongue (so I could see it), and although a horrendous treatment process I am alive and back to normal living. All be it with a bit of lisp at times which is worse after a drink or two (at least I have an excuse now). That’s why the cancer charity.

Why the millimetres 2 mountains charity? Ed one of the founders is a recovering quadriplegic. A tragic accident in April 2017 left Ed paralysed from the neck down forcing him to retire from a successful top flight rugby career. Told he’d probably only have limited use of hands let alone walk again Ed has shown ruthless defiance, focus and sheer hard work to allow himself the opportunity to live a relatively normal life. It was listening to Ed on a podcast with the now rebranded Good the Bad and the Rugby with Payno, Hask and Tinds, where he was talking about his story and one quote stuck out and really helped me come to terms with my diagnosis... "once you stop thinking why me? and think well why not me?" you come to terms with a situation much quicker... I wanted to repay his charity with a thank you - for how his story really helped me.
