Story
Darran Huntington (Daz) was a local lad who grew up in Mirfield, attending Mirfield Free Grammar School and 6th Form.
Daz loved both codes of rugby, his school years spent playing for Dewsbury Moor RLFC, Batley Boys RLFC, as well as rugby union for his Mirfield school side. As a senior player Daz Played for Huddersfield RUFC and Leodensian RUFC.
Daz was also a huge fan of the game and sport in general. He particularly enjoyed the 6 Nations and also his beloved Leeds Rhinos. Daz earnt the nickname “stato” due to his unrivalled knowledge of sport, he was that guy who while watching a game/match/fight would tell you everything there was to know about each player or sportsman.
Tragically in 2018 Daz lost his life at the age of 31, leaving behind a wife and two young children. Those who knew him were devastated and it was a difficult time for everybody, particularly his wife, children and closest family.
This game is to commemorate Daz’s life, to remember him in a positive way, the way he would have wanted it to be - he always threatened to put his boots on one last time, and this is our way of honouring that.
The match will be played between Ossett RUFC and Mirfield Old Boys, a team including Daz’s closest friends and lads he’s played with over the years at various clubs.
Ossett RUFC have kindly offered to host this event, providing opposition, equipment and facilities to hopefully make it a day to remember.
The match will be part of a family fun day at Ossett RUFC on the 7th July 2019 with proceeds going to The Rugby League Benevolent Fund, a charity that was selected by his family and raises money for players who have sustained life changing injuries.
