You know, you couldn't meet a nicer family. I will not use their real names. Florence is the mum. Abigail is her nineteen year old daughter. Thomas is her twelve year old son. They came to the UK from Nigeria on a work visa seven years ago. They came legally. Florence never drew a penny of benefits and never broke a single law. She worked hard caring for our old people and she paid all her taxes. In full.

Abigail got an 'A' in every exam she sat and won a place at university to train to become a midwife. Thomas is also doing really well with his studies. He's a a smart kid.

At first the Home Office was happy for Florence to work here and look after our elderly. Now they have changed their minds. Now they are no longer willing to renew her work visa. Now they want to get Florence and Abigail and Thomas on a plane back to a Nigeria - a dark and dangerous place where they have no family. A place the kids have almost no memory of.

Now Florence is applying for 'leave to remain'. She receives not a penny of State benefits even though she paid all her taxes for 6 years. To make things worse, she is not allowed to work. Not even an hour's worth. The family is expected to live on fresh air.

The community is their only hope. First Base will make sure they have food to eat and power to keep the lights and the heating on. But we cannot do anything to pay the rent. The rent is now due. £400. And if it is not paid the family will be put out onto the streets. In winter. In the wet and the cold.

At this point the State will finally step in and young Thomas will be taken into care whilst his mum and sister find a doorway to sleep in. If only Florence was allowed to work, she would have a job as a carer within a matter of hours. And she would be a brilliant carer.

But Florence is not allowed to work and the family is in big trouble. We want to change this. We want to pay their rent for six months whilst the Home Office goes about its business. We want to take away the nightmare. We want them to be able to feel a little bit more secure.
