Story

Firstly let me introduce myself for those of you who don’t know me. I am Mark Cavanagh, 22 years old, and have just graduated from the University of Hull. I have committed myself to going on a 10 week expedition to Borneo in February of the coming year. However it is important to note that this isn’t a holiday. The purpose of the trip is volunteering to make a sustainable difference to communities the environment and wildlife on the island. Previous projects that Raleigh have undertaken include building a kindergarten in Kampung Minusoh to educate children under the age of 6. Raleigh have also contributed to the construction of a gravity water feed system in Kampung Pinapak to provide clean water to the local community. This is the first of 54 gravity water feed systems that Raleigh and a project partner have committed to supporting. The environmental projects Raleigh are currently supporting include the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre and also the MORF reforestation project in Kampung Bowang Jamal. Whilst in Borneo I will be living in very basic conditions and will only be able to use whatever equipment I can carry in my rucksack.

This expedition is part funded by the Government and Raleigh, the charity responsible for organising the expedition. However it is up to me to raise the final £1000 sponsorship I need to be able to take my place on the expedition, not including any money I will need for kit, vaccinations and flights etc. I am planning to have my legs waxed to raise some money and will hopefully hold an event for all to see me go through the painful experience.  I will be updating my facebook page with the news of the event as and when I have it. So please feel free to invite your friends.

Any donation amount is greatly appreciated and all goes towards a good cause.

If anyone wants to know more about the expidition or about Raleigh then feel free to ask me. I have also included the Raleigh website at the bottom for those of you who want to know more, or even those of you who feel inspired and would like to apply yourselves!!!

Thank you for any donations once again they are all very generous. And I will keep updating the facebook group when any news comes along, and also with how far away from the target I am.
