Event: WfWI Trek to Everest Base Camp 2012, on 26 October 2012

Story

I have decided to join my dear and inspirational friend Valerie Boffy, and a team of women from Asia and Europe, to trek to Everest Base Camp in aid of Women for Women International.

Women for Women International is a grassroots humanitarian and development organization helping women survivors of wars rebuild their lives. Since its creation, Women for Women International has given hope to more than 351,000 women survivors of war and conflict and have helped them move toward economic self-sufficiency with our year-long program of direct aid, rights education, job skills training, and small business development. WfWI has distributed $108 million in direct aid, microcredit loans, and other program services. Since 1993, WfWI has mobilized more than 300,000 women and men in 185 countries worldwide to reach out and support women survivors of war – one woman at a time.

With your ongoing support, Women for Women International will continue to address women’s immediate and long-term needs, work to improve their status and opportunities and see what can be done to create a more just and peaceful world.

"War is not a computer-generated missile striking a digital map. War is the color of earth as it explodes in our faces, the sound of child pleading, the smell of smoke and fear. Women survivors of war are not the single image portrayed on the television screen, but the glue that holds families and countries together. Perhaps by understanding women, and the other side of war...we will have more humility in our discussions of wars...perhaps it is time to listen to women's side of history."

I include below Valerie's story of the trek and our commitment to WfWI and our appeal to friends and family to support our efforts

This extraordinary journey with this group of women will be about friendship, passion, freedom and the commitment to others. In the spirit of humility and gratitude, we will be pushing our physical and mental limits on behalf of those women who are deprived of most basic freedoms: the right to live in peace and happiness with their loved ones, the right to education and self accomplishment, the right to live with respect and decency.

We live daily with these vital basic rights, yet others can only dream of them. We owe it to these women, survivors of the horrors of war, to use the freedom which we enjoy to find strength within ourselves, and to share that strength with them.

It is my commitment to them, through this trek and through the money which we will raise, to give them the guidance and support and the will to dream again.

I appeal to you to please support me in raising vital funds for Women for Women International. I appeal to you to help women around the world whose lives has been devastated by war, violence and rape. Let us together reach out to them with the tools and resources necessary to move beyond crisis and poverty. Let us help them find the path of confidence and self-sufficiency.

With deep and sincere gratitude I thank you for your generosity,

Margaret
