On the weekend of 6th March 2022, Manchester Triathlon Club lost one of its own – Greg Strachey.
On a beautiful sunny Sunday morning, Greg joined the regular Group 3 club bike ride out into the peak district, over Monks, an amazingly car-free Snake Pass, past Ladybower reservoir and finally though Edale and over Mam Tor before heading back home for a Café Breakfast.
Unfortunately the group never made the Café as Greg suffered an unexplained accident on the way home and was seriously injured.
Greg received fantastic care from his ride mates and numerous passers-by who stopped to assist before the ambulances arrived. Shortly afterwards Greg was airlifted to Sheffield Northern General Hospital for emergency surgery.
Despite the fantastic care Greg received from everyone involved, unfortunately his injuries were too great and he sadly passed away on Monday morning.
Greg was a relatively new member of the club but he made a big impact. Not only did he throw himself wholeheartedly into everything, he always did everything with a smile and a friendly and encouraging word for everyone he met.
He won the Club’s Novice Athlete of the Year award last year and this year joined the Committee as membership secretary. The loss of Greg has left a large hole in the heart of this club.
Nothing we can do will ever bring Greg back but a number of people have asked if they can make donations in Greg’s memory.
After consulting with Greg’s family, we have set up this page to allow donations to the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance that attended the scene and gave Greg a chance by getting him to hospital so quickly that day.
This incredible service relies on charitable donations, receiving no government or National Lottery funding.
