Alpe D'Huez Challenge 2015 · 17 September 2015 to 19 September 2015 ·
Between the 17th and 19th September, a group of us will be taking on the 2015 CAC Alpe D'Huez Challenge. This involves relay riding 450 miles from Troyes (just South West of Paris) to the top of Alpe D'Huez.
We ride in teams of four and have two travelling from Guernsey, plus a third team comprising a further Guern exile with three UK based gentlemen. The total number of teams entered is likely to exceed sixty.
Our youngest rider is 51, everyone else is 52. Some of us are properly porky, and whilst there are a couple of fit blokes, we will even things up with beer/wine and by letting their tyres down.
Although the distance has been shortened to 450 miles this year, the organisers are describing the route as "a celebration of the mountains", meaning they've found some very big hills to torture us with.
Day one is 186 miles of undulating terrain, day two will be 175 miles with around 12,000 feet of ascent. Day three is a mere 80 miles, but in addition to the normal ups and downs, includes two Tour de France climbs. Chamrousse at over 13 miles and 4,400 feet and the infamous Alpe D'Huez at 8.6 miles and around 3,500 feet.
Rather than riding it in relay, all twelve of us will be taking on Alpe D'Huez - apparently we'll feel really fulfilled when (if) we get to the top.
Over 60 teams are taking part, so cumulatively, we'll be riding well over 27,000 miles in three days - that's round the equator plus quite a bit to spare.
We all cover our own costs, so everything raised goes straight to the designated charities - we're supporting the main CAC causes - Cancer Research UK and The British Heart Foundation. We hope to raise around £5,000 over the two Guernsey teams.
