So, this is what, in a moment of madness i agreed to do!
Day 1
- Afternoon ride approx 72km - expected arrival into overnight location - by 19:00. Our ride will take us via the centre of Munich (Altitude = approx 500m) - to pick up previous ride stage location! Overnight near to Bad Tolz (Spa Town). (Altitude = approx 680m)
Day 2 - Ride from Bad Tolz to Steinach am Brenner (Altitude 1000m) - Approx 135km - Our ride will take us from the plain of Upper Bavaria, and towards the Alps - we shall ride for approximately 25 km before we ride into the Isar Valley amongst the initial rumbling peaks of the mighty Alps! We shall then ride up into the mountains, and via the twin lakes of Sylvensteinsee and Achensee, before dropping down once again into the Inn Valley. We shall ride up the flat bottomed valley - and end our day with a stiff climb up into the final push up towards the Brenner Pass. We stay for the night in a small guesthouse part way up the climb - in time for some good food and refreshments!
Day 3 - Ride from Steinach am Brenner - Over The Brenner (1380m) and down to San Michele all Adige (240m) - today is a truly exciting day - crossing mountains, climbing high, crossing borders, discovering cultures, and enjoying wonderful downhills - But beware - we have a big day today - so we'll have to be focused - to get the ride complete!. By the time we shall be down in the wonderful Adige Valley. Distance 140km.
Day 4 - San Michele all Adige (240m) to Verona (90m) - beside Lake Garda (Distance 135km) - a beautiful cycle path will carry us down the Adige Valley - wonderful flat enjoyable riding - but flanked by high and stunning Dolomitic Peaks will be a day's ride to never forget. Then we shall climb a small range of hills over to picture postcard Lake Garda - which we ride beside for the middle of the day, before turning east to ride into Verona in the evening.
Day 5 - Verona to Venezia - Distance Approx 138km - after the riches of landscape and culture that have spoiled us for the last 4 days, we are treated to the piece de resistance a ride across the Po flood plain - and to Venice - one of the meditrranean's oldest and most celebrated civilisations. Fortunately our last day's ride is a flat one - so we should make good progress - and speed along the causeway and on to the most famous islnd in the world! We shall stay just outside Venice - within a short bus ride (on the mainland).
What started out as a ridiculous idea, has now become an exciting reality. Over the last few months i have worked so hard to be in a position to attempt perhaps the hardest, most physical event i've ever done. I have had tremendous support and help from so many people, but at the end of the day, well 19th September its going to be down to me. What continues to drive me on is you.In addition to cycling this epic distance for my own personal achievement, i want to raise some money to help in the research for cures for Cancer. I am sat here now thinking of my dad, who i dedicate my page, and this journey to. My dad was my hero, and my inspiration. Without him i would not have followed my career path. He was taken too early from me, and it was the hand of Cancer that prevented him from seeing his Grandchildren grow. He would have been so proud. I hope to improve this 'just giving' page, but in the meantime please consider donating to my cause. I will finish for now, with all my love. Shakey xx
